Hours later, Pogg stumbled away from the gathering of strange men, his mind reeling. One after another, they had shared stories too extraordinary to believe. Lives filled with triumphs and tragedies, victories over evil and losses that still haunted their eyes. Between the unbelievable tales came moments of quiet sorrow, their voices cracking with memories of loves lost and comrades buried. None of them knew why they had been granted such a gift—or curse—but they had all resigned themselves to the fact long ago. Despite the absurdity of it all, Pogg found himself believing them. It didn’t hurt that they all had very respectable Virtue stats.

How could they know so much about my skills? He’d never shared the details with anyone. None of the Chosen Ones they spoke of had reached his level, yet their understanding of his class was still unsettlingly precise. They seemed to know every nuance and mechanic. Some even described methods of using his skills he’d never considered possible.

And Belgoth… Melindra… Their accounts of those names sent a chill through him. The details matched too closely. The men even accurately described their mannerisms and speech patterns. There was no doubt they’d met the two at some point in time. Even more unsettling, it wasn’t only fabled figures. A few of the men had described visiting his own remote village, speaking fondly of the old innkeeper who’d raised him, Gregof. None, however, had ever mentioned encountering a boy named Pogg.

They claimed it was because he was younger than any of them. It made little sense to Pogg, but at this point, it was just one more mystery to add to the growing list.

In the distance, Pogg spotted Gareth saddling his horse. The weathered commander’s face was drawn with worry, yet his movements remained calm and deliberate. Despite their past disagreements, Pogg couldn’t help but admire the man’s steadfast sense of duty and his unshakable devotion to those under his care.

“Gareth,” Pogg called out. “Are you leaving?”

The commander turned, squaring his shoulders as he met Pogg’s eyes. “Ah, Pogg. Yes, the King’s Army marches west today. We’ll see the civilians safely out of harm’s way and establish camps along the coast. Lord Tygal has been generous enough to provide food and supplies from the western stores.” He paused, his expression softening. “And you? I hear the battle draws near.”

Pogg nodded. “It does. The time has come to see if the title of Chosen One means anything at all. I can only hope I measure up to the legends of the past.”

Gareth forced a smile, though the weariness in his eyes betrayed him. “You’ll make a fine accounting of yourself, I’m sure.” He extended a hand. “Good luck, Pogg. And…” He hesitated, exhaling slowly. “No, never mind. I’ll… see you when this is all over.”

Pogg clasped his hand firmly, feeling the weight of all that went unspoken. “Yes,” he said quietly. “When it’s over. Goodbye, old friend.”

As the commander led his horse away, Pogg set a steady pace through the camp.
